This Week in the Life of DROID: 8/3/2012

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 07:18 PM PDT

Can you believe it’s already August? This year is flying by so far and there’s still a lot of Android awesomeness on the horizon. As far as device releases, it’s been a pretty dreadful this summer, but Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich will certainly coast us into Fall and the Winter lineup of devices that will be released in the coming months.
As for this week, we saw the HTC Rezound finally receive its much deserved ICS update, Google Wallet received the update it desperately needed to be relevant, and we posted plenty of leaked images of the RAZR HD.
Here are the highlights of this week’s happenings.

Have a fantastic weekend, everybody!

Google Listen Discontinued Because You Have Other Options

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 07:18 PM PDT

Today, Google announced that Google Listen has been discontinued. Since the Google Play store is such a robust market for podcast apps, they would rather you take advantage of the “wide variety” that are available. If you already have it installed, they want you to know that after November 1, the search functionality on it will be killed off.
We launched*Google Listen*through Google Labs in August 2009, to give people a way to discover and listen to podcasts. However, with*Google Play, people now have access to a wider variety of podcast apps, so we've discontinued Listen. People who have already installed the app can still use it, but after November 1, podcast search won't function. You can access your podcast subscriptions in*Google Reader*in the "Listen Subscriptions" folder and download them from the Import/Export tab.
Any Google Listen users around? Do people still listen to podcasts?

Friday Poll: You Current Phone is?

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 07:18 PM PDT

Since our last “Current Phone” poll, almost 9 months ago, we have seen a number of impressive devices land on U.S. soil. HTC launched the One Series and the Incredible 4G LTE, Samsung gave us the Galaxy S3, and Motorola…well, they haven’t done much. But there is a good chance that many of you switched to something since last December, so we wanted to ask again. I get the feeling that the Galaxy Nexus is going to dominate this, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s tough to go wrong with stock Android. I’m just curious to see if the *Galaxy S3 made a dent in that group of the DL community.
*We couldn’t include every phone on the planet here, so we went with the most popular of the last year. If your phone isn’t listed, be sure to vote for “Other” and then tell us in the comments which phone that is.
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

n7player Hits 1 Million Downloads in the Play Store, Celebrates with Premium Version

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 07:18 PM PDT

Who doesn’t love a good deal on a cool application as a great way to end the week? n7player, a really slick music application that we have covered before, has hit 1 million downloads in the Play Store and decided to celebrate with a sale. The application itself is free, but the premium unlock download is only $.99 instead of the $3 it usually is.Just a reminder, this application works with music stored on your internal storage or SDcard, so do not look for Google Music support here. If you have that music though, check out this application and its unique and slick user interface. The sale lasts until August 10, so give this application a look.

Google Wallet Installable on All of Verizon’s NFC Phones, Getting It to Work Another

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 07:18 PM PDT

After the FCC ruled that Verizon could no longer block tethering apps, as it violated the “C Block rules” attached to their purchase of the C-Block spectrum that their 4G LTE network now runs on, we wondered if other non-tethering apps would be a included in the deal. From what we’re hearing, it does apply to other apps, specifically Google Wallet.*
As you know from numerous reports in the past, Verizon was blocking Google Wallet from their NFC-equipped phones because the app was “different” than normal apps. But after after the FCC ruling was handed out, and Google released the new cloud-powered version of Wallet, it suddenly became available to all of Big Red’s NFC-equipped devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, and Incredible 4G LTE.
If you cruise into the Google Play store today, and search for “Google Wallet,” you likely won’t find it for whatever reason. However, if you click the new direct link to the app on either your phone or web browser, you can install the app to your device.
Here is the direct link.
Once installed, it seems to still be blocked on the Galaxy S3 and Incredible 4G LTE from working, giving off a “Unfortunately, Google Wallet is not yet available for your device or mobile network,” message. If you own a Galaxy Nexus, there is a pretty good chance that it will actually work, whether you are rooted or not.
Results seem to be hit or miss for many, so all we can do is recommend that you give it a shot. Remember, you have to go through the direct link we provided above.

Let us know in the comments if you are having any success.

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 11:40 AM PDT

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 11:40 AM PDT

After you pick up your OG DROID from Daily Steals for $70, you may want to think about adding a tablet to the party. Woot is currently selling the Sony Tablet S, a beautifully designed Tegra 2 tablet, for $259.99, a package that includes a cradle. With its 9.4″ display (1280×800), dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, dual cameras, and expandable storage, this has always been one of the more appealing tablets in our eyes, it just didn’t get much play.
Sony is currently charging over $400 for this version, not including the $20 cradle. From what we can tell, this is in “new” condition and is not refurbished.

Video: First Look at Chameleon for Android

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 09:26 PM PDT

Chameleon for Android, a Kickstarter funded tablet home replacement app, has entered into its beta stage, which means that the 7,000 people that pre-ordered it will soon get an invite to start testing. Others have been hand-selected to test the app, a group that we were lucky enough to be a part of.
As is customary around these parts, we like to take apps that have generated a substantial amount of buzz for a test drive to see if they can live up to the hype. While this is still beta, the Chameleon team is confident enough in it to at least let people start to play with it.*
It’s definitely feeling good, aside from a couple of minor bugs that shouldn’t be hard to fix. The quickness is there, the few widgets that are available look good enough, and some of the features like the scrollable app dock at the bottom are solid features. We are seeing some limitations as far as widgets, wallpapers and folders go, however, the only direction for Chameleon to go from here is up. There is definitely potential to be reached. Since this is a beta, this would be the time to start requesting features and reporting bugs.
To give you our first impressions on it, we tossed together this video.
