Video: Quick Look at the Nexus 4 Bumper Case

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

When the bumper case for the Nexus 4 went back on sale earlier in the week, I caved in and bought one. After having a well-documented, not-so-awesome time with the glass on my first Nexus 4, I decided that this time around I would do everything in my power to protect the second one. So, bumper case we go. The most surprising part about it may be the fact that it arrived already, as in, a day and a half after ordering it. Not bad.
So what do I think? Well, it provides just the right amount of protection. You can set the phone face down or face up and the bumper’s lip should keep both surfaces off the ground/table/naked body. It’s minimal enough that it shouldn’t get in your way or make the phone feel too bulky in hand. But most importantly, it allows you to still see that beautiful Crystal Reflection backside. Mmmhmm.
Is it worth $20 plus the $6 in shipping? If you have already broken one glass back, it probably is.*

Tip: Check the “Rooted” Status on Your DROID RAZR HD

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

Back in August, we talked about a root checker that Motorola had built into devices like the RAZR and RAZR MAXX. To see if a device was rooted or had been rooted in the past, all you had to do was boot into recovery and look towards the middle of the screen for “qe” in yellow lettering followed by a 0/0, 0/1, or 1/1. If a “1″ was included at all, that meant your device had either been rooted before or was currently rooted. It was a sneaky move, to say the least.*
In the RAZR HD, and presumably other devices, a root checker has been built into Program Settings as well. From the dialer, if you type in ##PROGRAM and then a password of “000000″ (six zeros), you’ll notice a menu option at the very bottom that reads “Device rooting.” Sure enough, should you enter said menu, it will tell you if you are rooted or not.
The reader that pointed this out, also says that it will continue to say rooted even if you unroot, sort of like the 0/1 indicator we saw on the original RAZR. He did mention that if you flash all the way back to Ice Cream Sandwich, unroot, and then update your phone legitimately, that the “Rooted” status would go away.
Just thought you should know.
Cheers Nathaniel!

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

Just as a small note, Verizon announced that the below four cities will also be lit up with*4G LTE on December 20, alongside the other good-sized list of cities we published the other day.
New markets:

  • Lamar, CO
  • LaJunta, CO

  • Richfield, UT

Congrats to the citizens of those fine towns. May 4G LTE bring warmth to this otherwise cold holiday season!

Google Calendar Receives Update, Make Calls and Open Maps App Right From Notification

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

Another update has gone up for Google’s Calendar application, making it an even more functional piece of the Android OS. When saving appointments or dates, you can add in an address and phone number, which will then be displayed as a shortcut to the matching app when the reminder goes off.
For example, if you make a dentist appointment for tomorrow and add their number, when the calendar app reminds you of your appointment, you can call them right from the notification and tell them you’re too chicken to come in that day. Pretty fancy.
What’s in this version:
- Call and go to map directly from notifications
- Location suggestion on event creation
- Quick event creation from month view
Go grab it in Google Play.

Google Implements Confirmation Into Mobile Ads, No More Accidental Taps

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

Google doesn’t it like it that you may be automatically taken from an app after an accidental brush with an advertisement. With many in-app advertisements placed strategically to attract more clicks, Google still wants to make sure that users are actively meaning to tap on them. So that app of yours with a delay in ad-load time, that tricks users into tapping an area that eventually turns into an ad, will no longer work the same.*
Google had this to say:
Ads on smartphones are effective, but many of us have at some point clicked on an ad by accident, which ultimately is a bad experience for the user, the publisher, and the advertiser who pays for clicks that may not be valuable. Our team has been analyzing the types of ad formats where accidental clicks are more likely to occur due to ad layout and placement, and are constantly looking at ways that we can combat them.
As you can see in the image above, tapping on an ad should activate a big blue confirmation button with an arrow that says “Visit Site.” If you see an ad with a small blue button, you can click that and go directly to the advertiser’s site.
I can’t imagine app developers who make a living off of perfectly placed ads that grab accidental taps are going to be all that happy. With that said, users like you and I, should be thrilled.

For those of you who try everything they can to make those batteries last as long as possible, check out Deep Sleep Battery Saver. Quick Contest: Win 1 of 3 Galaxy Nexus Fantom Tempered Glass Screen Protectors (Upda

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

The Galaxy Nexus on Verizon is still to this day one of the most popular phones among Droid Life readers. It was the first Nexus (maybe the last too) to launch on Big Red, providing this passionate community the only fully open phone on their network of choice in quite some time. But now that the phone has been around for almost a year, it seems to take a backseat at times to all of the new phones that hit the market. So to show the G-Nex that we still love it, we wanted to hand out a couple of tempered glass screen protectors for it.*
The Fantom, made by XGEAR, is practically scratch resistant, keeps off fingerprints, and is thin enough to not add extra bulk to your device. At 8H hardness, you won’t find this kind of protection from any other screen protector. Then normally retail for $29.99.
Contest

Update: *Our three winners have been picked! David, ImmaDroid, and Sean, be sure to check your email!
Prize: *3 (three) Fantom tempered glass screen protectors for the Galaxy Nexus.
How to enter:
1. *In the comments, tell us why you still love your Galaxy Nexus.
Winners:
Today, at 3PM Pacific, we’ll randomly choose three winners from the comments.
*Winners need to have U.S. addresses.

It’s Official, Jelly Bean to Hit Verizon Galaxy S3 Starting December 14

Posted: 13 Dec 2012 05:04 PM PST

This week we have been watching Verizon play with their current support*documents*for the Galaxy S3, as they prepped for an update to be pushed to the device sometime in the future. This morning, we finally have confirmation that the Jelly Bean*(Android 4.1) update will begin tomorrow, December 14.*
At first the update will go out in batches, so don’t be alarmed if your device doesn’t*receive*it first thing in the morning. You will need some*patience*as Verizon starts to test the waters of the new software on a larger scale. Of course, Jelly Bean brings with it Google Now, enhanced notifications, and Project Butter. On top of that, Verizon has also enabled global roaming, Isis mobile wallet, and a few bug fixes.
And thanks again to our tipster who told us last week that December 14 was the day.
Do we have some happy SGS3 owners here?
