This Week in the Life of DROID: 12/7/2012

What a great and busy week it has been here at DL. We got through our quirkiest episode of the Droid Life show yet which you won’t want to miss (link is below). On top of that fun, we reviewed the Galaxy Camera, took a second look at the DROID DNA, got to play with the new Swiftkey Flow application, and our limited edition t-shirts are still up for sale through this Sunday.

USPTO Declares Apple’s Multitouch “Steve Jobs” Patent Invalid, The Crowd Goes Wild

Hot off the wire is the*announcement*that the U.S. Patents and Trade Office has found Apple’s ’949 multi-touch patent, that was a key factor in suits against Samsung and Motorola, to be invalid. After close re-examination, all 20 points of the patent have been ruled invalid, which means we can maybe expect some lengthy appeal processes*from many OEM’s that fell victim to Apple’s trolling earlier this year, assuming it stays invalid.*
Given that he has plenty of experience with patents, we’ll assume Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents knows what he’s talking about when he says that this move is preliminary. In other words, this doesn’t mean that Apple’s patent is done, but that this is the first step towards invalidating it.
First Office actions and other non-final Office actions are just preliminary. Many patent claims that are rejected at this stage do ultimately survive. There are many steps inside the USPTO, followed by a potential appeal to the Federal Circuit (and in a few cases even the Supreme Court).
Some people say that first Office actions are partial because they are based only on submissions made by those challenging the patent, and many examiners like to take a tough position early on in order to enable and require the patentee to present the strongest arguments in favor of validity. But it would be a mistake to underestimate the significance of a first Office action.
We shall see what happens next.

Nexus 4 Lacks OTG USB Cable Support, May Never Have It

A USB OTG cable, otherwise known as an on-the-go cable, can be used to help expand storage on a device with a limited amount, connect one to a gamepad, or turn your phone or tablet into a mobile workstation with a mouse and keyboard. They are a miracle tool for the mobile tech power user. Some cost as little as a $1, so if you don’t have one, I suggest you pick one up. Well, unless you own or ordered a Nexus 4 from Google.*
Originally sold as a device with OTG (USB)*compatibility, that may no longer be true. In fact, within the last day, Google updated their Nexus 4 support page titled “Connect to keyboards, mice, & other devices” to say that the device supports Bluetooth connections of 3rd party devices, but not through USB. Two days ago, it said the same thing as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 pages, which say, “…to your tablet via USB or Bluetooth and use it just as you would with a PC.” The Galaxy Nexus also supports OTG cables.
Theories as to why this change happened are flying all over internet forums. Some suggest that the device was supposed to have OTG support, but that the actual USB port on the device can’t produce enough power to run a mouse, keyboard, or gamepad. Others think it’s software related, and that an update to the OS could provide support down the road. I don’t know that we’ve heard an official statement from Google, but with the changing of their official support page, I’d say that the future looks grim. I also do not think that Google meant to leave this out, as every other Nexus device certainly supports this type of activity.
It’s unfortunate, as I know that many who ordered the device were partially sold on the idea that they could connect external storage on the fly to help ease their concerns over the lack of built-in space.

Google Looking to Replace Head of Mergers and Acquisitions?

We can’t get through a full week of working it seems that we don’t hear about another purchase by Google. Whether it’s a high profile buyout like they finished up with Motorola, or a smaller snatch up like they did with Snapseed, they tend to always directly relate to Android or some other product Google is working on or has future plans with. Today, sources close to the matter say that Google is to replace their head of mergers and acquisitions with their top internal lawyer, Don Harrison.*
The man that has been in charge of over 70 deals of Google’s has been David Lawee, but there is no confirmation from Google as to why the change is happening. From what is being reported, it looks as though Lawee will be placed in an investment group that could work closely, but*separately*from Google Ventures.
Whatever is taking place, good luck to you, gentleman.

Google Wallet Prepaid Card Refunds Finally Going Out, Processing Issues Resolved

Back in September, Google announced that the prepaid card program through Google Wallet was coming to an end and that customers could receive refunds for leftover funds around October 17. Sure enough, on October 17, the refund form went live, giving those of us with non-working Google Wallet apps (thanks Verizon!) or those with remaining balances a chance to get their cash back. Some of us weren’t sure if it would work for non-supported devices, though, since some of the form’s boxes had to be left blank, again, thanks to non-working Wallet apps.
Also, after filling out the form, users who requested refunds were left in the dark as to when they may receive those funds. Up until moments ago, when I received a status report from Google, I had no idea if or when I would be receiving a refund. According to the email above, that silence was due to “processing issues” that have now be resolved.
If you have yet to receive your refund, there is a good chance that it will be in the mail by December 22.

Full U.S. Roll Out of Google Fiber Would Cost Google $140 Billion

According to Goldman Sachs, the best estimate for how much it would cost Google to have a complete Google Fiber roll out to the United States would cost roughly $140 billion. That’s $140,000,000,000. That’s a lot of zeros. Technically, Google’s yearly budget for such projects is $4.5 billion, which means we could be waiting quite some time before others outside of Kansas City experience 1Gbps download and upload speeds.
Other estimates were done to see how much the cost would amount to if they decided to only light up half of America, which still equaled to about $70 billion. That’s just $25 billion over the amount of cash that Google has on hand during any given day of the week.
Come on, Apple. Lend a helping hand?
