Ice Cream Sandwich Update Finally Approved for Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

Along with word that Verizon’s Galaxy S3 is about to receive its first update, we are pleased to announce that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G LTE on Big Red is also set to receive an update. How does Ice Cream Sandwich, sound? We know that many of you have been waiting patiently for this update, especially after seeing*he WiFi version received it a couple of weeks ago.
The update brings you to*Android*4.0.4, includes pinch-to-zoom from your home screen, Google Plus integration, an update Quick Panel, data monitoring, a redesigned gallery app with photo editor, all new camera capabilities, and WiFi direct support. It’s a big one, folks.*
No word yet on when this update will start to rollout, but we’d assume that it could happen any day. When Verizon approves these things, we tend to see them in a matter of days. Let us know if it pops up on your device!
The update is 248MB in size. More info.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S3 Receiving First Update – “No SIM” Error Resolved

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

The first update for Verizon’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been approved as build VRALG7. Many of you will be excited to learn that one of the issues addressed is the “No SIM” error message that continued to pop up time and time again on your devices. We know that more than a few of you were dealing with this nagging issue, as we have seen the various forum posts and petition that were targeted at getting it resolved.*
Also along for the ride in this update is Big Red’s Remote Diagnostics Tool, something we had yet to see appear on a flagship-level device. Sure, it was included in an update for the DROID4, LG Revolution, and DROID Charge, but nothing of the Galaxy S3′s stature. For those not familiar, the Remote Diagnostics tool allows Verizon to have remote access to your phone during customer support calls. While they can’t use the tool without your permission, you can’t help but feel a bit uneasy over something with this power hovering in the background of your phone.
The rest of the update makesBackup Assistant more stable, improves data connectivity when using S Beam, and fixes Samsung TecTile issues with NFC.
Normally when we see Verizon approve an update, it starts to rollout to users in a matter of days. As you soon as you see something, be sure to let us know.
The update is 30.7MB in size.*More info.

Isis Mobile Payment System Delayed, Update on Progress Coming in October

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

Isis, the NFC mobile payment system created by Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T, will not launch this summer and has been delayed. The payment system was initially supposed to arrive in testing markets – Salt Lake City and Austin – this month, but because they haven’t checked everything off of their “punch list,” we will have to wait longer.
Their marketing head, Ryan Hughes, said that their focus has been on making sure that when they launch, that they “do it properly and do it right.” He wouldn’t provide a reason for the delay, but did mention that they were not experiencing any major issues.
He also mentioned that he doesn’t believe that Isis will struggle without the new iPhone 5. While that may be true to a point, it certainly would have been much more highly adopted had Apple decided to toss an NFC chip in their newest smartphone.
Additional “market momentum news” is going to come in October. Hopefully we have good news then.

Andrew Bell continues to share the new Series 3 Android Collectibles over at the Dyzplastic blog, with today’s being the “Nexus” collectible. Oh, he also comes equipped with his own mini-Nexus phone that you can see in his right hand.
Still no exact date for release, but I can’t wait to see the rest.*

iPhone 5 on Verizon Can’t do Simultaneous Voice and Data, Something Android Phones Ha

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

Just a heads up for those of you thinking about jumping ship and picking up the next iPhone. According to a Verizon spokesperson, the new iPhone 5 cannot do simultaneous voice and data, something all LTE Android phones seem to have no problem with. We aren’t exactly sure why it can’t, but it certainly doesn’t make this new single 3G+LTE chip of Apple’s seem all that magical any longer.*
Here is the statement from Big Red:
“The iPhone 5 was designed to allow customers to place a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network, while letting customers access the Internet over the WiFi.”
As a reminder, simultaneous voice and data means that you can place a phone call and then also use your phone’s data connection at the same time. For example, if you were to place a call to your significant other who then reminds you that it’s your anniversary, you can stay on the line with her while also pulling up Open Table to book a reservation for the dinner that you forgot about. (Yes, I totally stole that example from an ancient AT&T ad.) Or while you are sitting in your hotel on a conference call, you can book your afternoon tee-time or catch up on the latest Android news here at Droid Life.

Simultaneous voice and data will apparently work just fine on the AT&T iPhone 5. Or not so much?
And of course, all of Verizon’s Android phones are capable of performing such a task. In fact, a couple can do simultaneous voice and data over a 3G connection as well.

How to: Add Multiple Google Accounts to Your Android Device [Beginners' Guide]

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

Like many others, I have a few Google accounts. One which was my personal before I came to Droid Life and of course my business one that I use now. With Google allowing me to sync multiple accounts on one device, it allows me to*receive*emails from both accounts and also use services under different accounts as well such as Picasa, Google Play, and more.
Sometimes, you’re not the only one that uses your Android device. For example, if you have an Android tablet like the Nexus 7, maybe your children like to use it or your girlfriend. For times like these, it’s great that Google allows you to have multiple Google accounts tied to a single device. While your account can remain professional and business-centric, your other Google account can have all of the nonsense games and applications that one may download from Google Play.
Down below, we’ll go over how to set up multiple Google accounts on your Android device and you can start utilizing all of your accounts at once like a champion.*
How to add multiple accounts:

1. *From the main homescreen, open up your main Settings menu.
2. *Under “Accounts,” select “Add account.”
From this next page, you will choose which type of account you will add. Depending on what apps you have installed will determine which options you have. If you have nothing installed yet, you’ll be given options for Google, Corporate, and Email.
3. *For this example, select “Google.”
4. *If it is an already existing Google account, simply add in your username and password.
5. *By selecting “New”, your device will have you create a new Google account for use on your Android device.
Now that you have another Google account set up on your device, you can use it for another user on Google Play or whatever else you may need it for.
Alternative method:

The quickest way to add another Google account is from the Google Play application.
1. *From anywhere in Google Play, hit the settings menu.
2. *Select “Accounts.”
3. *The window will display the main account associated to the device and underneath will show “Add account.”
4. *Select “Add account.”
5. *From here, enter in the username and password to the Google account you wish to add to the device.
Once signed in, you’re free to roam the Play store with multiple accounts on the device.
*The rest of the*Android Beginners' Guide*is a one-stop shop for all of those new to Android.

Motorola Releases First RAZR HD MAXX Commercial, Phone Still Won’t be Available Until

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

When Motorola announced their new family of RAZRs – RAZR M, RAZR HD, and RAZR MAXX HD – we were a bit disappointed to learn that the HD variants wouldn’t be available for a while. In fact, Motorola and Verizon would only say that we would see the RAZR HD and MAXX HD some time “before the holidays.” That could mean the day before Thanksgiving for all we know. Actually, that probably is the week they’ll launch them, being the busiest shopping weekend of the year and all.*
So with that in mind, we were a bit surprised to see the first commercial for the RAZR MAXX HD pop up on Motorola’s YouTube channel yesterday. Of course, all it says at the end is “coming soon.” They do touch on the number one feature that smartphone owners seem to request time and time again though, and that’s battery life. I cannot wait to get a hold of one and put it through some tests. There is nothing like having 2-day battery life on a phone.
I did find it interesting to see them referring to the device as having an “HD edge-to-edge” display, knowing that it doesn’t come close to being as edge-to-edge as say, the RAZR M (our review). I doubt this means that a hardware change is coming, but since the display comes close enough, they’ll probably turn this into a new marketing gimmick, just like they did with the kevlar.

Daily Steals Offloading Brand New Motorola XOOM 4G LTE Tablets for $250

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

When will supplies of this tablet run out? It seems that at least once or twice a month they go on these flash sale sites and they never disappear. This time, it’s a bit different though. Over at Daily Steals, they have brand new (not refurbished) Motorola XOOM tablets for $250. They are 32GB in size, but the real kicker is that these are the 4G LTE*versions and not the WiFi-only variants. When first released, they were $700+ at Verizon.
If you’ve been looking for a good tablet that is built like a tank, then check out the XOOM. It’s still expected to receive Jelly Bean*and is the original Android OG tablet. History right here.

Tegra 3 Powered HTC One X+ Shows Up at FCC, Looking Towards AT&T

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

The HTC One X was one of our favorite phones of the year so far and the company is looking to make it even better. The device above passed through the FCC today under the model number*PM63100 which if rumors and benchmarks are believed to be true, will be the HTC One X+.From the prior benchmarks we know that this device is running the newest quad-core Tegra 3 chipset clocked in at a crazy fast 1.7GHz. Throw in some LTE and the One X’s great SLCD2 screen and you will have one powerful phone, a device that will suck battery like none other. Unfortunately for Verizon owners, the LTE bands in this device indicate an AT&T release but who knows? If rumors are true and a 1080p phone from HTC is headed to Big Red, you won’t mind if you miss the One X+, will you?Would you like to see this device on Verizon? Or the 5″ 1080p HTC device instead?Via:*Engadget

Steve Wozniak: “I wish everybody would just agree to exchange all the patents”

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:37 PM PDT

One of the few figureheads left of the old Apple Guard is Steve Wozniak, one of the co-founders of Apple itself. Whereas Steve Jobs promised to go to “thermonuclear war” against Android, Woz has always been a little more even keel. In a recent interview where he was hoping that the iPhone 5 would take better pictures than his Galaxy S3, he was asked about the patent dispute going on between Apple and Samsung."I hate it,” he said.*"I don't think the decision of California will hold. And I don't agree with it — very small things I don't really call that innovative.” Interesting words coming from someone so high up in Apple’s hierarchy. The Woz went on to say that he wants patents to be exchanged so everyone can build their best technologies. I think most of us here would agree with these statements.Do you think Wozniak’s opinions on the subject will change how Apple*pursues*things from now on? Or will Apple hunt down anything they think stands in their way?Via:*Bloomberg
