Last Fish for Android, Artsy Black and White Animations That Look Smooth Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT Over on Google Play, I came across an artsy black and white game that I’ve taken quite a liking too. What helped me was that it was also rated quite well which never hurts. The game is called Last Fish and it takes place in the darkest of waters. You’re fish that must fight to find food, avoid shadows, and be on the look out for nasty goo. It uses some pretty good tilt controls which actual adds character to the game without the need of on-screen controls that would most likely get in the way.* For a dollar, it’s a solid purchase. Galaxy Note 2 Launching on AT&T October 21? Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT Could we see the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on October 21? According to today’s rumor out of BGR, AT&T is at least planning to sell it on that day. I know that many of you are looking for a release date from Verizon, but we likely won’t have one for another few weeks. We had heard that this oversized phone may see a staggered launch in the States, so don’t be surprised if AT&T gets it first and the rest of the carriers follow closely behind. * We spent some time with the new Note earlier this week and came away impressed. If you thought that a bigger than big phone would fulfill your every desire, then this is the one to look at. Well, until HTC drops at 1080p phone on us. Click here to view the embedded video. Video: Documentray Style Film Shot with Google Glass at New York Fashion Week Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT Last week, we wrote a piece on how Diane von Furstenberg, a fashion designer was to utilize Google Glass to create a video on what it’s like to be part of the process that is New York’s Fashion Week. Today, the video is up and may we say it’s pretty cool. The quality is HD at 720p and I think it’s a pretty good step at turning some heads in favor of making this technology mainstream for everyone to utilize.* Stick around towards the end of the video to see Sergey Brin in the front row! Let us know what you think down below. Click here to view the embedded video. Via: Engadget |
How to: Setting Up a Third Party Keyboard on Android [Beginners' Guide] Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT One of the features that we tend to overlook is the ability to install custom 3rd party*keyboards*on our Android phones. They allow for different methods of inputting text such as swiping, pecking, speed pecking, or simply speaking into our device. The means of installing the keyboards are somewhat*questionable*at times so allow us to quickly walk you through it.* Installing a 3rd party keyboard: The best place to score a new*keyboard*is from Google Play. There’s many to choose from, but for this guide we’ll use one of the more popular ones called SwiftKey 3. 1. *Open Google Play. 2. *Search “SwiftKey.” 3. *Once you’ve located the app, install it onto your device. SwiftKey offers a great interface for enabling the keyboard from inside the application. The above image shows these steps. 4. *Once you’ve followed their setup guide, you’ll now be running a 3rd party keyboard. We used SwiftKey due to the fact that everyone tends to really enjoy it. It has a great look and its auto-correct is unbeatable. Now onto changing between keyboards. Enabling a 3rd party keyboard: Sometimes, the*keyboards*you install won’t have a built-in enabling feature. For this, we’ll walk you through how to enable a 3rd party keyboard from the Settings menu. 1. *From a homescreen, open up the main Settings menu. 2. *Under Personal, select “Language and input.” 3. *Under this menu, you will find every keyboard application you have installed. 4. *Check the box for which keyboard you would like to enable. A box will appear warning you that installing a 3rd party keyboard could be potentially risky. 5. *Select “OK.”You’ve now enabled the keyboard.*Depending on the device, you’ll see a button for “Default.” This button determines which keyboard your phone uses. Hit it and select the keyboard you wish to use. Now you’re up and running with your new keyboard. Changing between keyboards: Once you have multiple keyboards installed, you’ll want to easily be able to switch between them as you so choose. Either follow the directions above by going through the main Settings menu or follow this method below to enable different keyboards from inside your messaging applications. 1. *While inside an app that allows for text input, pull down on your notification bar. 2. *Select “Select input method.” 3. *Choose which*keyboard/input method you would like to choose. That’s the easiest way to go through them. *The rest of the*Android Beginners' Guide*is a one-stop shop for all of those new to Android. |
LG and Qualcomm Holding Event on September 19, Ready for a Snapdragon S4 Quad-core? Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT At the end of August, and just before the start of IFA in Berlin, LG announced the Optimus G. At the time, I referred to it as a “beast” because of its insane specs and the fact that the phone is the first to sport Qualcomm’s new quad-core Snapdragon S4 with an Adreno 320 GPU. Beyond the processor, it also has a 4.7″ True HD IPS display with 320ppi and will look equally as good as the new iPhone 5 display because it’s full sRGB. Not only will it look brilliant, but is the first to use LG’s G2 Touch Hybrid technology which means the display itself is ultra thin and cuts down on reflections. We’re talking a serious phone here, folks.* So when LG invited us to their September 19 event in NYC where they have partnered up with Qualcomm, we immediately thought, “Optimus G for the U.S.?” We don’t have confirmation on that being the case or anything, but what else could it be? Qualcomm wouldn’t be headlining another dual-core Snapdragon S4 phone event, right? We’ll know for sure next week when our man Kover is on the scene. Who isn’t excited to see this? |
Google Wallet No Longer Working at All on Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Updated) Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT For months now, if you were using a Galaxy Nexus LTE, there were ways for you to cirumvent Verizon’s ridiculous block on Google Wallet. All it took was either a browser trick, a sideloaded .apk, or a custom ROM with the app built in. It was pretty simple, for the most part. As of today, it appears as if Verizon and Google have found a new way to block the app from working on your phone, one that kills off most of the previously working workarounds. More than a handful of users tipped us off to a new pop-up (pictured above) that mentions something about the Wallet app no longer being “supported.” It then asks that you tap an “Update” button to get the latest version from the Play Store. Of course, once you tap “Update” and head into the store, you are greeted with a message that says that your device is not compatible. I can’t imagine that the lovely developer community won’t find a workaround, but for now, you’ll have to sit tight and deal with one of the more frustrating situations we have ever come across in Android. Thanks for keeping it “open!” Update: *Thanks to the wonderful DL community, you can jump right into the comments and get yourself a new and working .apk. Cheers James, Jon, Craig, Andrew, and Daniel! |
Order a 16GB Nexus 7 From eBay and Get a Free Case and Free Shipping for $249 Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT There is nothing better in the Android tablet game right now than the Nexus 7. Small, powerful and not expensive, Google really did a good job with this thing and if you are looking to pick one up today’s deal might be the right time for you to do so.The deal today comes to us from eBay which offers a 16GB Nexus 7, an official ASUS case to go with it and free shipping to boot. Unfortunately these cases will most likely not have the magnetic sleep/wake function that the Nexus 7 makes use of, but it will at least keep your tablet safe. Since it is the 16GB version the price tag runs $249 which is still a very good deal if you want to get a Jelly Bean tablet in your hands.BuyCheers Brandon! |
When is My Android Phone Getting Jelly Bean? [Verizon] Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:50 PM PDT The Jelly Bean update situation on Verizon is a tricky one. I say that because most Android phone manufacturers have yet to even update most of their phones to Ice Cream Sandwich. So how can we start talking about Jelly Bean updates? Well, we know that many of you are always looking for the most current information on this subject and thought we may as well create the official page for it just like we did with Android 4.0. Once word starts trickling out from Motorola, Samsung and the rest of the major players, we will update this post. I’d say that this is definitely one that you should bookmark. You will also find a shortcut to it in the sidebar.* Samsung
Motorola
LG
HTC
*As you can see, we left a lot of phones off of this list. We basically went back a year and took all of the higher-end phones that we think will get the Jelly Bean update. Almost all of these are already on ICS and are likely candidates to see another major update to Android 4.1. If other phones make the cut or some of these don’t, we will add them to or remove from the list. |

For those new to the game, you may not have heard of xScope. But trust me when I say that when Android was first getting its start, this was our go-to 3rd party browser. It had some incredibly innovative features like single finger pinch-to-zoom, but was also light and fast enough that few could compete with it. Over the last month or so, Gary (the developer) released a new version with Holo styling, more gestures (including the single finger zoom), and one of the more robust browsing experiences around. Definitely check it out.* Play Links: *xScope Browser ________________________________ ContestPrize: *One (1) Kindle Fire HD 7″ How to enter: 1. *In the comments, tell us what your favorite Android browser is and why.
