Android 4.2 Includes New Security System That Scans Sideloaded Apps, Also Warns of Mo

Once your phone receives an update to Android 4.2, know that Google has your back when it comes to security. According to a report out of ComputerWorld, Google baked a new security app scanner into 4.2, because many of you continue to install apps that aren’t from the Google Play store. All of those sideloaded apps that we post or that you find in shady dark alleys of the internet, will be scanned remotely on Google servers almost instantaneously. If the app is clean, you’ll proceed. If the app gets flagged, your phone will then warn you and let you decide if you want to proceed. This new app scanning service is optional and must be activated or it won’t run.
Also included in the new security suite of services for Android 4.2, is a system that will warn you if a text messaging service is trying to send out messages that could cost you money. If your phone discovers one of these, it will stop the service and then let you decide if you want to allow the action to happen or not.
Last, the app permissions page that pops up during app installs has been refined. As you can see in the screenshots on the left, it’s much easier to read.

Google’s Music Explorer Goes Live in the Play Store, a Visually Beautiful Music Disco

When Google introduced Android 4.2 this week, they made quick mention of a new music discovery service that would soon arrive in the Google Play store. The service, called Music Explorer, is now live and fully functional if you’d like to give it a spin. Actually, we heard from readers who saw it go live last night, but it now seems to be available to most users.
To access it, you need to grab your nearest Android tablet (I can’t tell if it’s coming to phones or not) and open up the music section in Google Play. Then, find an artist you like, tap on an album of theirs, and look for a box close to the price that says “Explore similar artists.” That’s actually a button that you can tap on – so tap on it. You will then be whisked away into the Music Explorer world. Check out the video below to see how to interact with it.

It’s simple, simply set the alarm and then when it goes off in*the*morning, the only way to make that*sinister*laugh to go away is to violently shake your device. But please, don’t let go of it. Google Preps Physical Google Wallet Card, Money Transfers, and Public Transit Passes?

Big news on Google Wallet today, as a future build has been supposedly leaked, spilling tons of information for the future plans of the service.*Physical*Google Wallet card, anyone? According to Android Police, who received the leaked app, Google plans to*distribute*physical*cards to users that can be programmed to mimic any major credit/debit card. Using your phone to program the card, you can decide which account of yours you want funds pulled from at time of the purchase, which means you can basically leave the rest of your plastic at home.*
That isn’t the only big news though – also seen in the application are menus and settings for withdrawing and*depositing*money into a “Wallet Balance” which could be linked across several Google services such as Google Play, etc. Another feature that we had hoped for was peer-to-peer money transfers which seems to be baked inside, as well as Transit Passes. For anyone living in a Metropolitan area, this will surely come in handy, as that will be one less piece of plastic you have to carry around.
Not long ago, a sign up page for a new version of Google Wallet went live and people could go enlist themselves. Could this be the next version? It’s definitely a lot to soak in, but if all of this pans out, Google is looking to be growing this service by leaps and bounds.

Samsung Stratosphere 2 Poses in Press Images on Twitter, the Keyboard Lives on!

The Samsung Stratosphere 2 and its physical keyboard may still be on the way. A fresh press render showed up today, even though it has been 2 months since we last saw the device enter Verizon’s Equipment Guide. This could be a sign that the phone will be announced at any moment, or it could be a leftover image that has finally surfaced.
We know the Stratosphere 2 will have a 4″ Super AMOLED display, physical slideout keyboard, 4G LTE, and a much faster processor than its predecessor. We’re under the assumption that the device runs a Snapdragon S4 dual-core, just like the Galaxy S3. Other than that, this device will sport Samsung’s TouchWiz, probably over the top of Ice Cream Sandwich, and launch at a reasonable mid-range phone price.
For keyboard lovers, this may one of your last options for a phone with a physical keyboard. Well, Motorola still seems willing to make them, but that could change now with their new executive team.
