This Week in the Life of DROID: 11/30/2012

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 04:11 PM PST

Another week is in the books! We managed to make it through episode 7 of The Droid Life show, probably our best show to date. I complained a whole heck of a lot about a bunch things, including the Galaxy Nexus update situation, the glass back of the Nexus 4, and the ordering process for it once it went back on sale. Other than that, the DNA is getting great reviews from readers, the Note 2 is finally on Verizon, and and our coverage of both has been non-stop. Hit up our recap of this week’s best below, so that you don’t miss anything.

Enjoy the weekend, always have a sober*chauffeur, and try to break a sweat at least once.

Samsung: Gmail and YouTube Headed to Verizon Note 2 Multi-window Feature Soon

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 04:11 PM PST

If you were as disappointed as I was to learn that the multi-window feature on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2*from Verizon was limited to only a handful of select apps, then maybe this news will cheer you up. One of our readers hit up Samsung’s official support account on Twitter, asking why YouTube and Gmail were not yet available while using multi-window. Samsung Support’s answer – “That feature will be available soon.”
It’s tough to tell if this was simply a quick response to the “When is multi-window coming to my device?” question that we are sure they get asked numerous times throughout the day or if they actually are going to bring in additional app support down the road. It would make sense for them to fully open it up to app developers. How much better would it be if you could use Chrome, YouTube, Gmail, and a favorite Twitter app at the same time?*
On a related note (pictured below), Total Commander works flawlessly with multi-window. Once downloaded from the Play store, it automatically appears in the list of apps for use with multi-window. Does this mean that app developers can build in support without approval from Samsung? I’ll have to let developers answer that question.
In the mean time, feel free to share any other apps that you find to work with multi-window.

Cheers Jess and Trey!

Display Comparison: HTC DROID DNA vs. Galaxy Note 2

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 04:11 PM PST

After comparing the DROID DNA’s 1080p display to the Nexus 4 and Galaxy S3, we had a number of readers ask that we do the same with the Galaxy Note 2. Well, here you go. Pixels, pixels, and more pixels. In case you were wondering, the Note 2 is no longer considered to be “PenTile,” something we we couldn’t be happier about. Then again, the PenTile arrangement on the Galaxy S3 is not necessarily noticeable except under a macro lens, thanks to the high pixel count. At this point in the game, displays are so good, that you could throw almost any display tech at us and we’d probably be*satisfied. Times are good.
Oh, and ignore the white splotch on the icon of the DNA. I thought I had a dead pixel, but it seems to have fixed itself and I cannot reproduce that spot any longer. Could have been dust for all I know.

16GB Nexus 4 Now Shipping in 6-7 Weeks or Not Until 2013

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 04:11 PM PST

The amount of time before new orders for the 16GB version of the Nexus 4 will be fulfilled is increasing rapidly. After going back up for sale on Tuesday, the estimated ship date had gone from “1-2 weeks” to “3-4″ weeks in a matter of hours. By the following morning, it had jumped again to “4-5 weeks.” Here we are two days later, and the new estimated ship date for the 16GB version sits at 6-7 weeks. So if you planned to purchase a Nexus 4 at either 8GB or 16GB, you won’t see it until 2013.

Video: Overview of Verizon’s Galaxy Note 2 – Multi-window, All Those Logos, and More

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 04:11 PM PST

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been one of the most anticipated devices to come to Verizon in some time. I would almost argue that a device hasn’t had this many DL readers excited since the Galaxy Nexus launched a year ago. Sure, we’ve seen the DNA and RAZR HD hit store shelves, but after Big Red passed on the original Note, this latest version was in the sights of many at an early stage.
With device in hand, we thought we’d do a quick tour of some of the differences between this version and the T-Mobile version that we reviewed a few weeks ago. Most notably is the multi-window feature that Samsung teased a while back, a feature that allows you to run two apps at the same time, adjust the screen areas taken up by each, and accomplish tasks much faster. There are also some cosmetic changes, including the branding of the home button (yikes). We cover it all in the *video below.*

Verizon’s Galaxy Note 2 Sort of has Swiftkey Flow, But Not the Cool New Beta Version

Posted: 30 Nov 2012 04:11 PM PST

As the Verizon version of the Galaxy Note 2 started to arrive in customers hands this week, many were quick to point out the fact that “Swiftkey Flow” was listed in the keyboard settings. As we wrote earlier, Flow is the newest keyboard from Swiftkey that will enter beta testing in the very near future. It’s very much like the new Android 4.2 keyboard, which has gesture typing that predicts in real-time. With the 4.2 keyboard, and the beta version of Swiftkey Flow, both change the predicted word as you swipe between letters. It’s very cool.
The version of Flow on the Note 2 is not even close to being the same. Sure, it allows you to swipe between words, just like Swype has done in the past. However, it does not predict in real-time, but instead offers suggestions after you have fully swiped a word. It works, but the new beta version is what you should all be excited about. We have two videos below to show you the difference.*
Version of Swiftkey Flow on the Galaxy Note 2:

New Beta version with real-time prediction (jump to 30 second mark):
