Top Gear: Stunt School Hits Amazon Appstore, Perfect for Crash Test Dummies Posted: 01 Oct 2012 09:34 PM PDT Finally, an official Top Gear game for Android. Over on Amazon’s Appstore, Top Gear: Stunt School Revolution has become available today and it’s exactly what we would have expected; driving fast through crazy obstacles and doing reckless things behind the wheel. Perfect for people like me who wish they could do doughnuts in the parking lots without getting in trouble.* For being free, the game has some pretty solid graphics and controls. All cars can be upgraded and customized, and the maps have plenty of the world’s most popular cities in great detail such as New York, Moscow, and of course, London. The game’s only downfall is that it is only on the Appstore for now. Hopefully it can make its way to Google Play shortly. Amazon Appstore Link |
Custom ROM Roundup for Galaxy Nexus AOKP Build 4, XenonHD, and LiquidSmooth Posted: 01 Oct 2012 09:34 PM PDT Instead of continuing our coverage of just CyanogenMod or AOKP, we thought it would be nice for some of you to broaden your custom ROM horizons. If you have never tried or heard of XenonHD and LiquidSmooth, try them out. For starters, XenonHD is based on Jelly Bean 4.1.1 JRO03R and*comes*with plenty of fantastic tweaks and mods that will impressive any avid flasher. Things such as battery tweaks, speaker tweaks for louder output, and other little goodies are just the start to a huge changelog they posted a couple of days ago.* As for LiquidSmooth, we’ve written about their work plenty. It’s incredibly fast, smooth (duh), and has many users that would put all of their money on this ROM if it was in the ring against any other. Much like a lot of other ROMs, it comes with countless customization options for colors, forced tablet mode tweaks, and plenty of other things that would take up this whole page if I had the time to write it all. And while we’re at it, we would like to let you know that just in case you still only care about AOKP, that Build 4 has just gone up. Follow the below links to try out any of the following ROMs I just mentioned. Happy flashing. Cheers Justin and Guy! |
Update I535VRALHD for Verizons Galaxy S3 Available for Download Posted: 01 Oct 2012 09:34 PM PDT A newer software build of VRALHD for Verizon’s version of the Galaxy S3 has been leaked and posted for download. This is only slightly different than the VRALG7 update that was released a few weeks ago. It’s still Android 4.0.4 and probably doesn’t bring back on-device search, but may include new radios and could help with battery life. We’re hoping that this also fixes the last few “No SIM Card” errors that some are still experiencing even after the last update.* If you want to grab the full file to be flashed in ODIN, you can do that here. If you want to flash this new build as a .zip ROM, hit up the XDA link and you will find it in both ODEXED and DEODEXED formats. Via: *XDA | PhoneArena |

New Google+ for Android Commercial Reminds You How Awesome the Service Would be if An Posted: 01 Oct 2012 03:11 PM PDT The Google+ team released a new commercial today, selling Android users on the features that make it one of the coolest social networks on the planet. Actually, it’s more of a reminder to me that while Google+ is awesome, especially at how it handles Events, video chatting through Hangouts, and photo sharing, that I still know very few people outside of tech enthusiasts that use it. I hate to keep asking, but someone sell me on G+. |
Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 Receives Jelly Bean Leak, Where You At Verizon? Posted: 01 Oct 2012 03:11 PM PDT A ROM based on a leaked build of Jelly Bean for Sprint’s Galaxy SIII has hit XDA. This build is basically what should be rolling out to Sprint phones here shortly and maybe this could be a sign that we can expect the same from Verizon sometime soon? No promises. There has been*minimal*kernel tweaks to this ROM and a Jelly Bean boot up animation has also been added, but in here you will mostly see Samsung’s TouchWiz throughout and nothing else being touched.*If you’re the owner of a Sprint SGSIII and want to see what all of the hype is about, check it out. Verizon SGSIII owners, when do you think we can expect to see Jelly Bean? Via: XDA |
Google Moves Ahead of Microsoft as Second Most Valuable Tech Company, Still Far Behin Posted: 01 Oct 2012 03:11 PM PDT The growth of Google’s stocks over the past few months have won them quite a milestone today. Google has passed Microsoft and now stands as the second most*valuable*tech company behind Apple. It should come to no surprise of regular readers here, but it seems that Google’s hands in almost everything tech has been working out well for them.If Google is looking to expand the Nexus brand in the coming months their stocks could gain even more value. Microsoft also has their Surface tablets and Windows 8 coming out soon though, so the battle for second behind Apple could get heated here pretty soon.Via:*The Verge |
How to: Set Data Limits on Android [Beginners' Guide] Posted: 01 Oct 2012 03:11 PM PDT With the introduction of Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean,*Google*has enabled Android devices to notify their owners that the device has reached a set data limit. You as the owner can set this limit anywhere from 0.0MB all the way to whatever your plan is set at. If you’re unlimited, then this feature is probably something you won’t be using anytime soon.* Below we have written out the directions for setting a data limit. These limits can be used as just a warning or as a way for the device to automatically restrict data usage to make sure you don’t go over your carrier’s plan. Additionally, users can set time cycles for the data count to reset, which should usually be set on your billing cycle.*If you’re a heavy user, then this feature could save you later down the road. Instructions: 1. *Open the Settings menu. 2. *Under “Wireless & Networks” select “Data usage.” If you would like to enable a data limit, check the box for “Set mobile data limit.” Once the limit is reached, the device will disable your mobile connection. 3. *Under “Data usage cycle” set the time of your billing cycle. (Example: Sep 1 – Oct 1)4. *Using the horizontal orange line, set the limit at which you want the device to disable data. 5. *Using the two vertical white lines, set the range of time you would like calculated. 6. *Once your mobile data reaches this number, it will notify you in the notification area and disable data. Hopefully this can save some of you data hogs from going over your limits. Happy streaming! *The rest of the*Android Beginners' Guide*is a one-stop shop for all of those new to Android. |
James Bonds Android of Choice is the Sony Xperia TL and It is Coming to AT&T Posted: 01 Oct 2012 03:11 PM PDT The next, and maybe last, Daniel Craig Bond movie is coming out soon and not without it’s product endorsements. Sony has snatched up the rights to say that Bond uses an Android device, more specifically their newly announced Xperia TL. We’re not sure what makes this a Bond phone since it lacks cool gadgets like a grappling hook or blinding laser beam.Sony’s latest flagship is however, a 4.6″ device that will be surfing AT&T’s LTE network. On top there is a*720p HD Reality display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine and the rear features a 13MP camera that can go from sleep mode to taking pictures very quickly. A 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor is at the heart of it all, but if you’re going for your wallet you will have to wait. AT&T didn’t say when this will be launching and left us only with the clue of “in the coming weeks.”Via:*Engadget |
The Next Nexus Phone, What I Want to See Posted: 01 Oct 2012 03:11 PM PDT If today’s rumor is true, and Google does plan to*unveil the next Nexus phone in October, then I can’t help but start putting together a list of features I hope to see. To be honest though, my list isn’t huge, however, there are some things I must have in order for me to feel really good about purchasing this phone. Because after all, I will be purchasing this phone, no matter what. Overall, I really just want Google to take pride in hardware for once, along with focusing on the bells and whistles of software.* Manufacturer I actually do not care if LG, HTC, or Samsung make the next Nexus. I have to admit that I would be somewhat disappointed if it were to be Sony, as the designs of their phones, in my opinion, have been some of the ugliest in the business for years now. Motorola would be welcomed, but their name hasn’t been included in even one of the Nexus rumors that have come out over the last few months. I’d prefer HTC if they could build anything close to the quality of the One X. They aren’t likely to produce the phone though, so that leaves us with LG and Samsung. While I’m still in love with the overal design of the Galaxy Nexus*and wouldn’t be disappointed with a slight re-hash, it feels like it’s time for some new blood to enter the Nexus game, which is why I’d prefer LG at this point. If the design is anything like the Optimus G, I’d be more than happy. Display Display tech on smartphones has come a long way, even since the Galaxy Nexus launched with the first ever HD Super AMOLED display last November. It’s crazy to think that as one of the first 720p displays in the business, it is now looked down upon as not being one of the best in less than year. Samsung has now improved the HD Super AMOLED so much, that it is no longer PenTile and is noticeably better than the one on the G-Nex.*LG is using True HD IPS+ LCD panels with an impressive pixel density and Sharp is ready to start mass producing 5″ 1080p panels, that are likely first headed to HTC. For the next Nexus, I don’t necessarily need for it to be 5-inches at a 1080p resolution and with 448ppi. I just want it to look stunning, dump the PenTile arrangement, get incredibly bright, and show colors that pop off the display. LG’s new LCD displays are what I would prefer, since they use an RGB Stripe arrangement, can generate 470 nits of brightness while using less power, and incorporate a new G2 Touch Hybrid Display technology that makes it seem like you are actually touching whatever is on your display. As far as size goes, the Galaxy Nexus and its 4.65″ display are as big as I would like to see. And to me, that’s only bearable because the navigation buttons are on-screen, giving the display about 4.3″ of usable space. With the Galaxy S3 and One X, which have hardware navigation buttons, their 4.7″ and 4.8″ displays are too big for my liking. Camera The 5MP camera on the Galaxy Nexus is one of the worst in recent history. Well, you could also argue that stock Android’s camera software is partially to blame. The reason I bring that up, is because the HTC One X has arguably one of the best smartphone cameras ever, but with stock Android on it, it’s camera immediately turns to garbage. So for the next Nexus, Google needs to focus on not only putting in a quality sensor, but also fixing camera software. Samsung and HTC are changing the way smartphone cameras function with impressive new feature sets in their custom skins, so I would love nothing more than for Google to adopt some of them. Make it an 8MP camera, fine tune the stock camera settings, give me burst mode, and better sharing capabilities. Build Materials Please Google, do not make the next Nexus out of pure plastic. Apple is over there tossing in fine metals, glass, and polish, while each Nexus phone seems to be made of some of the cheapest materials on Earth. And this is why we would love for HTC to produce a Nexus, because they are taking materials seriously with ceramics and fancy “microarc oxidation” processes. Just give me a uni-body design and don’t use flimsy plastic. Price Since the phone likely won’t have a carrier partner at launch, we are looking at having to buy it at full retail directly from Google. Hopefully Google sticks to their Nexus 7 approach and makes the phone ultra-affordable. The Galaxy Nexus is still available for $350, which if you haven’t figured out already, is a steal for an unlocked phone. Give me everything above in a sub-$400 package and you’ve got yourself a winner. Other Aside from those 5 things, I would of course, love to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, a 2500+ mAh battery, NFC, LTE, etc. These things are all sort of standard these days (or are about to be), so they aren’t receiving their own section. But please Google, let’s not go OMAP this time around. In somewhat realistic terms, what would your next Nexus be? |
