New Google Street View Feature Lets You See Where The Internet Lives Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT Have you ever been*curious*to see where the*Internet*and all of your important data lives? For the first time, Google is opening their many locked doors and allowing people to see just how much work goes into to keeping their business up and running. What makes the tour interesting is that it isn’t done*through*video or*guided*tour, but actually done through Google’s Street View.* Once you locate one of Google’s many data centers, you can take a virtual walk through and get an inside look. A very neat and nifty feature indeed. Click here to view the embedded video. Via: Google Blogspot*[2] |
Tip: Use Your Wireless Xbox 360 Controller With Rooted Nexus 7 Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT We’ve known about*compatibility*with PS3 and Wii controllers, but wireless Xbox controllers, so far have been something many in the Android mobile gaming world having been craving. Apparently, a developer over at XDA has made this dream into reality.* Root is required, but as many know, rooting a Nexus 7 takes very little effort. You can see some one-click instructions to root right here. If you already have root, then it’s simply a matter of mounting the device through terminal and entering just a few commands. Once the minor tweaks are completed, the wireless controller should work perfectly after a simple reboot. For instructions and a full walk though, check the via down below. Via: XDA*[2] |

This matches up to the date that our sources gave us last week, along with a detailed list of additional launch details. What Isis would not confirm, is specific device compatibility, carrier details, or how long they plan to test in these couple of markets. The head of marketing at Isis,*Jaymee Johnson, had this to say: Isis will be launching in Austin and Salt Lake City on Oct. 22. By year end, as many as 20 Isis Ready handsets are expected to be in market.* We look forward to sharing more details on Oct. 22 So, October 22 is the day that we’ll find out all of the dirty details. Can’t wait. |
Use Your United MileagePlus Points to Buy a 32GB Nexus 7 Today Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT Look, the 32GB Nexus 7 is real, there is no denying that at this point. So rather than posting up screenshots from every retailer on the planet to show that it’s coming for the 100th time, we thought we would pass along this screenshot from United’s MileagePlus rewards program that lists the device as being available for order. If you have 49,000 Award Miles, you can order this bad boy today and receive it in 10 business days. On a related note, we have seen shipping screenshots from distributors that show fulfillment as early as 10/17 (today), with most big shipments arriving on 11/7. I’d say the first week of November is your launch week. And remember, that Andy Rubin is going to be on stage at AllThingsD’s conference to talk shop. Most of us are assuming that Google will hold a press conference some time around his appearance to unveil the LG Nexus 4. I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced this 32GB Nexus 7 as well. Swype Beta Receives Update, Tell Me Again Why It Isnt In Google Play Yet? Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT We’ve been following development of the third party keyboard, Swype for quite some time. In fact, it’s been years. While we still await publishing to Google Play, they continue to push updates to the keyboard and this newest version has a few features that we thought were share worthy. Firstly, there is now the addition of “trending words.” For example, PSY’s Gangnam Style has become a*cultural*phenomenon, so the word “Gangnam” shall now be recognized and added for easy entry. Gee, awesome. Secondly, and more importantly, tablet users can now switch between a plain layout keyboard and a split keyboard for the wider displays. That way, swiping with your fingers over greater distance is now uber easy. Grab the newest version here. Via: The Verge P.S. Come on, put it on Google Play already! |
First Episode of The Droid Life Show is Live Tonight! Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT Seriously, that title has no hypebeasting in it, whatsoever. We are in fact going to do a live broadcasted show tonight for the first time, that will hopefully turn into something that we can continue to do on a regular basis. It’s called The Droid Life Show, and yep, it’s about Android. Oh, and no, it’s not a podcast (people still do those?).*This is a live Google+ Hangout with video feeds of the entire DL team – Ron, Tim, Eric and yours truly.* During the broadcast, we plan to talk about hot topics from the last few days, rumors that have snuck into our inbox that you may not have heard yet, and anything else that the DL community couldn’t stop talking about. If anything, it’s a way for you to extend your obsession for Android and to watch four guys make fools of themselves. We can’t promise that there will be fancy music, cheesy FM DJ noises, or gimmicky titles for topic sections, but it still should be a lot of fun. And what else were you going to watch tonight, pre-season NBA basketball or Gossip Girl? The first episode is live tonight at 6:00PM Pacific (9:00PM for those on the east coast) and will be featured here on the site. We will try to keep the show to under an hour long. There will be a chat room for everyone to rant and rave and comment on the variety of Matrix-like green checkered shirts that may be seen. To make sure you don’t miss the action, following us on Google+ is probably a great idea. We’ll also announce it live on Twitter as we get going. And again, all of the action will be posted right here, on Droid Life. Wish us luck… |
UK Retailer Confirms 32GB Nexus 7 for the Holidays Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT A couple of weeks ago, we broke news over a 32GB Nexus 7 that was headed to UK retailers. Since then, numerous reports have come out to solidify that report, but today’s might be the nail in the coffin. UK retailer Argos released its Christmas shopping guide this week that includes a listing for the new 32GB Nexus 7. It’s listed at £199.99, the same price as the current 16GB model. I’d say there is a good chance that the 16GB model disappears after all. Via: *Rock Tech Daily |
The Only True Comparison of the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S3 Will They Blend? Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT Oh, the folks at Blendtec have done it again. If you’re*unfamiliar*with the channel, then let me sum up what these people do. They take anything and everything, then use their heavy duty blenders to destroy it. Viral video gold. Their latest video pits the iPhone 5 up against Samsung’s Galaxy S3. Incredibly, Samsung’s plastic holds up extremely well in terms of time-to-shred compared to the iPhone 5.* Either way, it’s sad to keep watching a ton of devices be*destroyed*for entertainment purposes. Click here to view the embedded video. Cheers everyone who sent this in! |
Google Wallet Prepaid Refund Form is Live, Be Sure to Get Your Money Back Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT Google announced back in early September, that the prepaid cards program in Google Wallet was coming to an end and that any remaining balances would be honored via refund (check or prepaid MasterCard). Since the service can only be used at a handful of locations and carriers keep doing their best to block the app from your phone, there is a good chance that many of you have remaining balances left on those cards. I know I do.* In order to get your money back, you will need to fill out Google’s refund form that we have linked to below. The form asks for your Google Wallet device ID, IMEI, MEID, name, phone number, email, and address. If the Google Wallet app is no longer working on your device or you cannot access it, Google is recommending that you place a “0″ in the Wallet device ID field. Go get yourself a refund! Verizon is Collecting and Selling Your Data, You Can Still Opt Out if Youd Like Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:34 PM PDT Over the last two days, Verizon has come under fire over a new service the carrier is offering to third party data collectors. In short, Verizon is scooping up generic information on their customers such as which devices they own, what webpages they browse, which social media accounts they activate, GPS locations, the customer’s age, and even more intimate details such as if the customer owns a pet. Big Red takes this data and then sells it, without a name tied to the bundle, but with a label like, “sports enthusiast, frequent diner or pet owner.”* Some view this program, called Precision Market Insights, as being on the verge of illegal and violating the Wiretap Act. Hanni Fakhoury, a staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, was interviewed briefly by CNET, who submitted the following statement on Verizon’s PMI program: I don't see any substantive difference between collecting content from one person and turning it over to someone, and collecting it from multiple people, aggregating that information and then turning the aggregated data over to someone else
In the end, there is still a capturing of content from the user at some point and that's what the potential (Wiretap Act) problem is. Verizon, who ensures that the customer’s privacy is their top priority, issued the following statement to place customer’s worries to rest:Verizon is committed to customer privacy and takes the issue seriously. The Precision program complies with the law and protects the privacy of our customers. The reports available through the program will not disclose the content of specific customer communications because each report will contain aggregate data from a large number of customers to protect privacy. Customers who do not want their data used as part of the program can opt-out at any time. By allowing people to*voluntarily*opt-out, Verizon may have found somewhat of a loophole in terms of the legality of the service. But then again, as Declan pointed out over at CNET, what business does Verizon have selling our information when they’re already getting $80+ a month from us for using their service. As this story progresses, we’ll keep you updated. To opt yourself out of this data collection program, you can do so here. Via: CNET | Consumerist |
