Next Nexus Dubbed LG Optimus G Nexus, Program Changing to Allow for Any Manufacturer Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT Ready to learn all about the next Nexus? According to our pal Taylor from Android and Me, the next in the program will indeed be made by LG and will be dubbed the Optimus G Nexus. For a couple of weeks now, rumors surrounding the next Nexus included LG, but Taylor claims to have essentially confirmed it with a handful of sources. We know him personally and tend to take him for his word, especially in Nexus talks. As you all know, the Optimus G is already a favorite of ours because of its more-than-impressive set of specs which include a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB RAM, 13MP (8MP in some cases) camera, a brilliant 4.7″ IPS+ HD display, and a slim body. The skinned version will arrive on AT&T and Sprint at some point in the near future, but according to today’s rumors, the Nexus version could arrive in November. * We would assume that the phone will be an unlocked GSM phone, sold directly through the Play store, and not tied to a carrier. Along with the arrival of this phone, we should see Android 4.2. While the numbers may seem like it will be a small upgrade, it could bring with it better power management, a new version of the Google Play store, new features geared towards a new Nexus program (which we’ll talk about in a minute), and lay the groundwork for Android 5.0. There could be one major UI tweak though – a change from multi-page home screens to a more tabbed approach. Lastly, there is a chance that we see some sort of a “customization center” that allows you to choose from a stock Android experience or a custom skin from the manufacturer of the phone (Sense from HTC, Blur from Motorola, TouchWiz from Samsung, etc.). And finally, Andy Rubin may take the stage at the end of this month at AllThingsD’s Dive conference to talk about everything a new Nexus program that would include the device from LG. This new Nexus program will employ a more open approach that allows almost any manufacturer to join in on the fun, as long as they adhere to some strict guidelines. They must include a stock Android experience and 64MB of secure memory for media streaming. They can toss in their custom skin as part of the previously mentioned “customization center” to give consumers choice, but the base must be able to easily support Android 5.0, the next big release following 4.2. Let all of that soak in for a second. Excited? You should be. If true, this would give you choices in a Nexus device and would make it less of a competition for OEMs. Via: *Android and Me |
Be the Shark in Jaws Revenge for Android Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT One of my favorite movies has been made into a fun Android game called Jaws Revenge. In this game, you play as Jaws and of course, terrorize people. By eating as many people and certain objects as you can, you gain points and can even level up your shark for bigger teeth, faster speeds, and other goodies.* It’s free to play with 40 levels and has so far been a blast to play. Go take a bite out of it and let me know what you think. Play Link Click here to view the embedded video. |
Tip: Quickly Drag and Drop Text With a Double Tap in Jelly Bean and ICS Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT In Jelly Bean and Ice Cream*Sandwich, the Android team built in a quick way to quickly move text around that you may not have seen before. All it takes, is a double tap and hold, and then you have control over the word you would like to move. You can easily rearrange words in a text box or take one and copy it to another. The video above demonstrates it in case that didn’t make any sense. The trick works perfect on the Galaxy S3 with TouchWiz over Ice Cream Sandwich. As you’ll see in the video, it has its issues on stock Jelly Bean and apparently, other ROMs as well. Via: *reddit |
Wednesday Poll: Would You Buy a 32GB Nexus 7? Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT This morning, we saw an inventory screenshot that points to the*possibility*of a 32GB Nexus 7 model. We’ve already been over the benefits of having the additional storage space, so now it’s time for us to ask how many of you would actually drop dough for this device. With most Nexus 7 owners already pleased with their 8GB and 16GB variants, is releasing a 32GB option necessary from Google and ASUS? On top of this, how much would it go for? As far as speculation goes, my guess would be about $299 given their already in-place pricing structure – another $50 for double the storage of the 16GB model sounds fair to me.*Or, as Kellex has pointed out, maybe we could see a price drop in the previous models and the 32GB option would be sold for $249. Lots to think about. Let us know if a 32GB Nexus 7 is interesting you. Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll. |
LG Optimus G Officially Headed to AT&T and Sprint at Some Point Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT The LG Optimus G will arrive on AT&T and Sprint…at some point. According to LG, these two carriers will be among the first to offer it, we just don’t know when that will be. We aren’t even being told “coming weeks” or “soon” or “November” – it’s basically a mystery. I would assume it will arrive before the holidays or this is the most pre-mature press release in history. Either way, Verizon customers should be saddened, as this phone is a true beast.* With its Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, LTE, 4.7″ True HD IPS+ display, 32GB of internal storage, 2100 mAh battery, NFC, and improved suite of software features, there are few phones that can match up to it on paper. The actual user experience will be something we will focus on the minute we get one in our hands, but so far, I’m looking forward to this phone. Once we have pricing info and a release date, we’ll be sure to pass it on. Sad that this won’t be coming to Verizon or are you not interested in LG products? Googles Drive, Wallet, and Play Music Receive Updates for Android Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT Just now, Google’s teams have pushed out updates for three of their widely used applications -*Google Wallet, Play Music, and Google Drive. For the most part, only Wallet and Drive have received new “features” so we’ll go over those. For Wallet users, the app includes new security and battery*improvements*as well as other fixes that should make the app more stable. Can never argue with that. Google Drive app users have*received*the largest additions such as creating new folders, an update to gesture controls, pinch-to-zoom document editors, and lots more. As for*Play Music, it’s merely some bug fixes with nothing new being added. Go get your updates! Cheers David! |
Motorola: We Will be Considered for the Next Nexus, but Given No Special Treatment Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT Every time we ask the Droid Life community to tell us to describe the Nexus phone of their dreams, it almost always begins with, “built by Motorola.” For whatever reason, Motorola has yet to carry the much-coveted “Nexus” title on a phone, even now that Google owns them. Many were hoping that this year, we would finally see our first Motorola made Nexus, but so far, no rumors have pointed to such a situation. That doesn’t mean that Motorola didn’t try this time around and won’t be trying each every year going forward.* In a sit down with CNET, Motorola*Senior Vice President of Product Management Rick Osterloh, said that they will “absolutely be one of the people considered the next time Google delivers its Nexus phone.” He also mentioned that they won’t be receiving “special treatment,” just that they would certainly love to be a part of the program. Osterloh went on to say that there is still a “firewall” between the Android and Motorola teams, something Andy Rubin mentioned a few months ago, so that they can operate as an independent company. In order to keep Android an open platform, this is probably the right move. With rumors of a multi-Nexus program happening this year, Motorola probably has a better chance than ever to receive the honor of creating a Nexus phone. We still wouldn’t expect Moto to be included in this year’s batch (if there are more than one), however, this year may be the first to surprise us. The lack of Nexus rumors is intriguing. Samsung Sets Up Jelly Bean Update Page for Devices, Galaxy S3 Only Listed as Coming Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT Samsung now has a support page dedicated to listing out the devices that they expect to update to Jelly Bean. The page lists out the Galaxy Nexus (both Sprint and Verizon versions), the Nexus S 4G, and the Galaxy S3 on all of the major U.S. carriers. As you’ll see below, they show that Jelly Bean is already available for all of the Nexus devices listed (which it is), but would only go as far as “Coming Soon!” for all Galaxy S3 variants. According to this page, the list will be altered as needed or updated when updates or information about those are released.* One thing we are a bit concerned about is the lack of a Galaxy S2 presence. The device has been out for some time now, but is still one of the better phones on the planet and surely can run Android 4.1. In fact, Samsung has already committed to updating the GS2 overseas, so we can’t imagine that this list won’t eventually contain GS2 variants as well. So if you own the previous version of the Galaxy S2, let’s not freak out yet. Via: *Samsung | The Android Soul |
Restore jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 5.1.1 factory Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:19 PM PDT I am trying to restore my jailbroken iphone 4 5.1.1 to its factory "restored" settings. I have the ipsw and tried shift restore but apple isn't "signing" this iOS before. I don't think I have the SHSH saved anywhere either as I've tried using redsnow, but I am unsure what stitching blobs is or which option is the correct one. I would really like to restore my phone! I messed up something and over 3.7Gb of my photos in videos can't be detected by the phone but are still occupying the phones memory as "other" files according to itunes. I've tried using iphone browser to look in my DCIM folder and there is nothing there as well as deleting the "sqlite" data file on photo album data. Is there a way to detect all jpg and movie files on the iphone's memory?! PLEASE HELP WISE ONES! I would really like to have these 3.7Gb back! |
