DROID Bionic Soak Test Incoming, Should be Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 08:52 PM PDT

According to the flood of emails that just landed in our inbox, Motorola has invited DROID Bionic owners to test out a new software update. Since Moto and Verizon missed their original Ice Cream Sandwich deadline, and later told us to expect it in Q4, I’d say this is likely it. We were told last week by a source that the update would be here within 2-3 weeks.
Soak tests usually take a couple of days to start. Once they rollout to testers and are successful, the official update tends to go live a few days later.
Can you believe it?
Cheers T, M, M, and N!

Android 4.1.2 Factory Images for “yakju” Galaxy Nexus and “soju” Nexus S

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 08:52 PM PDT

This afternoon, Google posted Android 4.1.2 factory image files for the “yakju” Galaxy Nexus and the “soju” Nexus S. They previously released the same files for the “takju” Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7, so that about wraps up their world unlocked GSM lineup. All that’s left are a couple of Nexus S models and the device expected to receive the update months after everyone else, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus (“toro”).
On a side note, the first factory image for the Nexus Q (“tungsten”) has also been posted. It’s an Android 4.0.4 build IAN67K.

Google Releases Zagat App to Google Play, Find Great Restaurants Near You

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 08:52 PM PDT

A lot of eyebrows were raised when Google decided to purchase Zagat, and we haven’t heard much since then. Google+ and Maps both added Zagat ratings to restaurants and businesses, but other than that it’s been quiet. Today though, Google launched a re-built Zagat app for your culinary explorations.
The app feels distinctly Google – it doesn’t necessarily have the Holo UI but it feels well put together and responsive. After signing in with your Google account, you can see the ratings of restaurants and even leave your own ratings. You can sort by ratings, distance or what kind of cuisine you’re in the mood for. Overall an awesome application.

FoxFi Now Works With Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus Running Jelly Bean

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 02:38 PM PDT

Once the Verizon Galaxy Nexus was updated to Jelly Bean, our favorite free WiFi tethering app FoxFi, no longer worked. We aren’t sure what change in Android 4.1 killed all of the fun, but that is no longer something we need to worry about. The developer has fixed the problem, though we aren’t sure how. The app itself hasn’t been updated, however, he mentioned to one of our readers that it should now be working. I immediately pulled it up after hearing this, and sure enough, it works. In fact, this post was written while being tethered to my G-Nex with FoxFi.

My Top 10 Android Games of 2012 [My Life Scoop]

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 02:38 PM PDT

The folks behind Intel’s My Life Scoop have asked that I return for another quarter and share my thoughts on life and tech. The first topic that I tackled was one that we talk about quite often here at DL, games. If I could look at all of 2012, what were the top 10 games that stood out to me the most? Or better put, which games did I spend countless hours on in favor of doing something productive? It was a tough list to narrow down because of the extensive list of great games on Android these days.
If you were looking for a spoiler, the image above is a good place to start.

Google’s Eric Schmidt Says “Android vs. Apple is the Industry’s Defining Contest”

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 02:38 PM PDT

Eric Schmidt has never been one to shy away from comments on Android’s biggest competitor, Apple. Speaking yesterday in an interview, he said that there was a platform battle between Android and Apple and that it was the “defining” battle of the industry.*Schmidt went on to say the battle between the two companies would benefit the consumer in the end. More competition means more innovation which gives us better mobile devices in our hands. He also threw in a jab at Apple’s decision to switch away from Google Maps, saying, “Maps are hard,*Apple should have kept our maps… They’re better.”Do you feel that this defining battle will in fact benefit the end user?Via:*The Verge*|*AllThingsD

Google+ App for Android Updated, Page Owners Can Finally Take Control

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 02:38 PM PDT

Google+ users will be impressed with a new update to the application that is rolling out today. The update doesn’t have a long list of changes, but the ones that it brings were requested by lots of users.
What’s in this version:

  • Google+ page owners can view, post and comment from mobile.
  • Discover people and topics more easily using ‘Find people’.
  • New Home screen Widget re-design.

Power users of G+ will be excited about the page owners update. Google is also looking to make finding and connecting with other people easier with the ‘Find people’ section. I can’t remember the last time the Facebook or Twitter applications were updated, but Google seems happy to keep pumping out upgrades like this within every other month it seems.
Excited with these new features?

Shadowgun: DeadZone Public Beta Hits Google Play, Tegra 3 Devices Only For Now

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 02:38 PM PDT

Madfinger Games has pushed the public beta of Shadowgun:DeadZone into Google Play today, looking for users to help them make the game better. For now, only Tegra 3 devices will be able to take part in the beta, but who knows how long that will last.
As the developers look to improve network and server connections, you can*experience*some lag in between games, but nothing that should be out of the ordinary for a beta. Anyone looking for some actin-packed multiplayer action should go download this immediately and try and find me in a lobby. Good luck trying to win though.

Quick First Look: LG Optimus G on Sprint and AT&T

Posted: 11 Oct 2012 02:38 PM PDT

I’m about to jump on a plane to leave beautiful San Diego, but before that happens, I wanted to toss up this quick video tour of the LG Optimus G on both Sprint and AT&T. LG handed over review units of each device last night, giving me all of a couple of hours to try to dive into them. Full reviews will come later, but the video below should give you a good feel what we’re working with here, along with some first impressions. To put it simply, this phone is insanely fast.*
