Video: ASUS CEO Shows Off the New Padfone 2

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

The folks over at Bloomberg have posted a video of ASUS’ new Padfone 2, being handled by none other than the company’s CEO, Mr. Jerry Chen. In the design department, ASUS should be awarded medals. Instead of being attached inside of a compartment like previously, it looks like the phone simply sits on the back side (with a slide-in motion) in the direct center of the tablet dock for use of the phone’s camera. It looks very slick.
As for specs, the phone’s display is set at 4.7″ with a resolution of 720p. Chen also mentions a quad-core chip with LTE, which leads us to think that it is powered by the Snapdragon S4 Pro. Much like the previous Padfone, fans here in the U.S. can expect to hardly see the Padfone 2, but that won’t stop some folks from importing the device.

Download: Gmail 4.2 With Pinch-to-Zoom [Root Required]

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Ready to do some Friday afternoon tinkering? How does the new Gmail 4.2 sound? We showed you this new version earlier this morning, which includes pinch-to-zoom in emails along with a new swipe-to-delete/archive feature. They may sound like small improvements, but they are all things that you will quickly realize that you can no longer live without.
So in order to use this, you have to have root, because you are going to be moving around some system level files. You can try to do this all in adb, but I’m still not even sure that that is possible. If you are brave enough to dive into this, let’s do it. It should take all of 5 minutes.
Download: *Gmail2.apk [mirror]
Instructions:

1. *Download the Gmail2.apk from above and place it on your internal storage.
2. *Create a nandroid backup, just to be safe.
3. *Once your phone has rebooted, delete or move any Gmail.apk on *your device.
*You’ll need to look in /system/app for Gmail.apk and /data/app for com.google.android.gm-1.apk.
4. *Once moved/deleted, you should reboot your phone.
5. *Once rebooted, you can try simply installing Gmail2.apk on your phone.
6. *If that doesn’t work, put the file in your SDK/Platform-Tools folder and type this in adb:
adb install Gmail2.apk
7. *You should now have the new Gmail 4.2 up and running.
*Note – Depending on the ROM, there may be Gmail .odex files that will need to be deleted as well.

Video: Need 50 Reasons Why Your Galaxy S3 is Better Than the New iPhone?

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Whether we want to or not, many of us find ourselves having to justify our decision to buy an Android device over Apple’s new*iPhone 5. Now, we aren’t into device bashing (we promise) and we think there’s room in this world for everybody’s opinions, but we thought it would be good for all of our Galaxy S3 owners to be equipped for their next battle.*
The Galaxy S3 features many unique things that the iPhone does not – NFC technology, expandable memory, removable battery, and you can even throw in that we have a dedicated Google Maps app. Burn. Below is a video listing out a total of 50 things that the SGS3 has that the iPhone 5 does not.
Go study and the next time an Android hater comes knocking, you’ll be ready.

Samsung 10

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Google is planning on making a splash in the next few months with their Nexus program. We all know about the Nexus phones that are supposed to be dropping soon, but we are pretty certain that Samsung has a tablet up their sleeve to add to the Nexus portfolio. CNET is reporting that the two companies are working towards a 10″ Nexus tablet to follow up the wildly popular Nexus 7.We’ve heard before that the display will be pushing a*2560×1600 resolution, which equals 299 ppi and is more than any other tablet out there right now. Unfortunately, it sounds as if we can’t expect this tablet anytime before “the first half of next year,” which is a pretty big timeframe. Are you going to start saving now? Or are you even interested in what Samsung has to offer?Via:*CNET

Onliner Briefly Reviews the LG Nexus – Compares to Galaxy Nexus and Reminds You That

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Onliner, a Russian news outlet, has had an LG Nexus prototype in its hands for a few days now, something we are all admittedly jealous of. Today though, they released a preview or semi-review of the device, giving us a look at what an unfinished prototype device is capable of. If you aren’t picking up the sarcasm in that last sentence, let me rephrase. Their review mentions “prototype” and “buggy” more than I care to count, so don’t buy into this as some definitive preview of LG’s Nexus phone.*
Overall, they talk about low benchmark scores even though it has a Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. They mention reboots and buttons not always working, the fact that it’s only running Android 4.1.2, and that Beam refuses to work. But again, it’s a prototype, so nothing has been optimized. For all we know, this isn’t even final hardware – and most certainly isn’t final software.
But, because we like talking about Nexus phones, let’s dive into the good parts of this, like how it compares to the Galaxy Nexus, the gorgeous display, and if the camera is decent or not.
Vs. Galaxy Nexus

Which one is the LG and which one is the Samsung? Tough to tell, right? Obviously, the one on the left is the LG Nexus, thanks to a moved speaker grill and a shiny silver iPhone 3GS-ish rim around the device. The form factor though, is almost identical. The only noticeable differences appear on the backside, which you can see below. The LG device does not have a hump, measures in slightly thinner, has an 8MP camera that sits off-center, and a mosaic tile finish. Oh, the front screen is not curved like on the last two Nexus phones from Samsung, something I actually enjoyed.
Camera

Here are 4 additional camera samples (resized) that are nothing to write home about. Onliner blames buggy camera software for the poor results, however, I’d argue for the 10th time that this won’t change when the phone is officially released because the stock Android camera software has always been awful and almost always produced low-end pictures. Since this phone is running Android 4.1.2, maybe we’ll see Android 4.2 at launch along with new camera software.
Display

Onliner was quick to point out that the display is beautiful and on-par if not better in ways to the iPhone 5′s. Since the display is likely the same 4.7″ HD IPS+ display that is used in the Optimus G, this should surprise no one. They said that the display gets brighter than the iPhone’s, has worse contrast, and shows excellent viewing angles. We’ll talk more about this display soon, as we have two Optimus Gs in our possession.
Overall

It’s a prototype. Do I need to say this again? Prototype. Nothing about this phone is final or official except for maybe the processor, display, camera sensor, and RAM. For all we know, the software will be updated, hardware could change, and Google may have surprises up their sleeves for the unveil. I personally love the look, as the Galaxy Nexus design is still one of my favorites. It’ll be a great device, assuming it doesn’t come with only 8GB of internal storage.

Razor Salvation and Sumioni Demon Arts Hit Google Play With Force

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Last night, two high profile games hit Google Play that come with NVIDIA’s Tegra stamp of approval. Razor Salvation, is an kill em’ all game, where you’ve been sent back to Earth to save survivors of some sort of attack on humans. You’re placed in a giant pod equipped with machine guns, rocket launchers, and other various weapons and you must kill enemy forces while saving humans. The game costs $2 and if blowing things up is your style, then it’s worth a shot.*
Sumioni Demon Arts is certainly the most interesting game of the two. It was previously released for the PS Vita and features some very unique gameplay. Using your fingers, you draw pathways and walkways for your character to*maneuver which helps you complete levels and kill huge monsters. The story takes place in ancient Japan, where an evil Ink Master has taken over the world with powerful monsters. Your character is a demon that was summoned by one of the good Ink Masters and it’s your job to save the world.
The game costs a full $12.83, so you may want to do some research into this game before dropping that kind of dough. If you pick either of them up, let us know what you think.

Isis Mobile Wallet Launch Details – NFC SIM Cards, Free Cash, and Limited Device Supp

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Isis Mobile Wallet, the mobile payment solution created by Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, will launch in its first test markets on October 22, according to sources of ours. As previously announced by Isis, those markets are Salt Lake City, UT and Austin, TX. Isis, as many of you know, is a similar service to Google Wallet, in that it aims to turn your smartphone into a virtual wallet, giving you a place to store credit cards, loyalty cards, and find special offers. Below, we have additional details you may not have heard, but will likely see soon when the service goes live.*

  • Virtual Cards: *As expected, Isis will hold virtual versions of credit cards, an Isis Cash Card (prepaid card), store loyalty cards, and a section for special offers and promotions.
  • Bonus Cash: *When you first activate Isis, there will be a $10 bonus card for you to use. If you want even more cash, you can upgrade the Isis Cash Card to “reloadable” status which will land you an additional $15.
  • Security: *If your phone is lost or stolen, you can call Verizon and they will freeze Isis from working.
  • Merchants: *Isis will work at merchant locations that use Visa PayWave, MasterCard Paypass, Discover Zip, American Express and Google Wallet.
  • NFC-SIM Cards: *From what we have been told, Verizon will use new NFC-SIM cards on their Isis approved devices. We aren’t sure why they aren’t satisfied with simply using the on-board NFC chip, but this likely creates an additional level of security. It’s also a level of security that they can have intense control over, I would assume.
  • Devices: *The official “Isis ready” device is the DROID Incredible 4G LTE. As you will recall from this morning, the device is set to receive an update to make it Isis ready. Additional devices will be made available at a later time, but you should note that not all NFC phones can support Isis. If you live in a trial market and purchase an Incredible 4G LTE on or after October 22 (launch day), it will be activated with a new NFC-SIM card. If you already own an Incredible 4G LTE and live in a test market, you will be able to obtain an NFC-SIM to replace your current SIM.
  • Incredible 4G Purchase + $50 in Cash: *From October 22 to November 20, you can buy an Incredible 4G LTE and receive a $50 Visa Pre-Paid card. From what we understand, you will have to activate Isis and submit a rebate form in order to get the card.

Again, October 22 is launch day for the two test markets. Isis and their partners have not released details for a nationwide rollout. It could be months for all we know.
What are your thoughts on not all NFC devices being “Isis ready”?
