This Week in the Life of DROID: 10/5/2012 Posted: 05 Oct 2012 07:47 PM PDT Finally, we’re getting to the time of the year that we love here at DL – Nexus rumor time! This week has been filled with some pretty juicy rumors, so we’ll take the time to go below and make sure to highlight all of the good ones.
Have a fantastic weekend, everybody! |
Tin Foil Hat Time: Server Logs Hint at Motorola Nexus Tablet and Phone? Posted: 05 Oct 2012 07:47 PM PDT Oh boy, Nexus fever has gotten so out of control these days, that we’re spending nights in our parents’ basements digging through server logs to find clues. Brace yourselves, because if the wild conclusion jumping that you are about to experience is correct, we could have two Motorola Nexus devices on our hands. Try to follow along with the madness after the break. Hypebeast in full effect.* The Clues! According to activity in server logs from the crew over at Android Police, two devices by the names “manta” and “occam” have appeared running unreleased versions of Jelly Bean. Actually, the builds are Android 4.2, which we have been talking quite a bit about recently, a build which is expected to launch on the next Nexus. These logs show a variety of Jelly Bean builds -*JOO92B and*JOP04C are examples – that obviously, have not been released thus far. So normally, when unreleased versions of Android show up, we assume they are running on a Nexus device. Why on Earth would an OEM have an early look at Jelly Bean before Google, right? OK, so we have Android 4.2 on two devices. How did we get to the idea that they could be made by Motorola? Well, AP is jumping to the conclusion that “occam” is in reference to Occam’s Razor, which could in turn be a subtle hint at a Motorola Nexus RAZR. A big jump, I know, but hey, it’s a wild world! I don’t know that Motorola has ever been that clever in their codenames for devices, but with Google in charge, their naming game could have been stepped up. (Yes, there is a bit of sarcasm in there.) The other device carries the name “manta” which AP is connecting to the previous Motorola XOOM tablets, which carried the codenames Stingray and Wingray. Manta has to mean Mantaray, right?!? Or, it’s simply a fish reference, which many Nexus devices have carried in the past and has nothing to do with Motorola. Or it’s a coincidence. Tough to tell, especially from something as simple and info-weak as a server log. The Verdict! I’d be the first the admit that the unveiling of a Motorola Nexus phone would be a joyous occasion (the tablet would have to win me over). I don’t necessarily believe that server logs have given us that much hope in that happening, just yet. However, this could help point towards the idea that there will be more than one Nexus device over the next couple of months. And who knows, maybe the LG Nexus phone that the world can’t stop talking about is the occam? Loads of questions and tin foil hats, not a lot of answers. Via: *Android Police |
Rumor: Android 4.2 to Introduce Enhanced Google Now, Project Roadrunner, New Play St Posted: 05 Oct 2012 07:47 PM PDT Since many of you will likely not upgrade to LG’s oft-rumored Nexus when it drops next month, you probably care more about the version of Android that will ship on it rather than the device itself. According to a massive rumor post today from our buddy Taylor over at Android and Me, the list of new features could be extensive, as the build gets bumped up to Android 4.2 (probably still Jelly Bean).* Customization Center The next version of Android may include some sort of customization center. The basic idea here, is to give average Android users a centralized place to go to change ringtones, wallpapers, and other settings that in the past, haven’t always been that easy to find. There may also be new “templates” that a user can choose from to quickly change the color scheme or appearance of the UI, including icons. In bigger news, this may be the location that Google allows OEMs to offer up their custom skin in favor of stock Android. There is a chance in either this version of Android or the next iteration, that users will have a choice between stock and a skin like TouchWiz or Sense. But wait, what about updates? According to this rumor, the device will receive stock Android updates quickly, just like Nexus devices do now. Manufacturers will still be able to update their skin on their own time, but the skinned version of Android may not be accessible until it has been updated. Either that, or the user can wait to update Android until the OEM has their skin ready. There is a lot going on there, but it could mean big things for those of us that hate skins and like timely updates. New Google Play We have always wondered why Google Play hasn’t been forced to the forefront of Android. With Android 4.2, that may change to include notifications for promotional campaigns (optional of course), personalized searches, more billing options, and easier in-app purchases. While I’ve never been a huge fan of advertisements in my notification area, I wouldn’t mind knowing from time to time if there is a sale on products in Google Play. Google Now Google Now may receive an update that allows users to ask it for guidance on changing settings on their phone. For example, one could ask Google Now to help adjust volume or brightness or turn Bluetooth on. Rather than solely being a Google Search tool, it could take care of simple device functions as well. Project Roadrunner You all remember Project Butter and its focus on improving UI speed, right? According to today’s rumor, there may be another special project named Project Roadrunner which has a focus on improving battery life. Details are scarce, but one of the number one complaints around these parts when it comes to Android has always been poor battery life. Rather than worrying about creating massive batteries in slim shells, Google may be trying to solve the problem on a software front. Talk about a wealth of info to digest. It’s tough to tell if any of it will come to fruition in Android 4.2, a later version, or at all. Most of it sounds like functionality that will make the experience seamless overall, something I think we can all appreciate. Anything in particular standing out to you? Via: *Android and Me |
Acer Iconia Tab A110, A210 and A510 to Receive Jelly Bean This Quarter Posted: 05 Oct 2012 07:47 PM PDT According to an Acer spokesperson, the company has official made plans to roll out Jelly Bean to the Iconia Tab A110, A210 and the A510 before the end of this year. On a less happy note, they also confirmed that the*A100, A200, and A500 would not receive the update most likely due to limitations in the hardware. By the end of the year may seem like a long wait, but it’s most definitely better than never. Keep your head up, Iconia owners. Via: TechnoBuffalo |

CNET: Google and LG to Unveil Nexus Device at End of the Month Posted: 05 Oct 2012 01:35 PM PDT According to CNET, they claim to have all but confirmed Google and LG’s new Nexus device. Assured to be based on LG’s Optimus G, the device is set to be unveiled at the end of October and will more than likely feature the specs we wrote about earlier today – Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB of RAM, True HD IPS display, 8MP camera, and the two 8GB and 16GB storage configurations. Of course, the new version of Android, 4.2 will also make its debut. As for an official name, it’s said that Google and LG are working closely to finalize a name. We here have been referring to it as the Optimus Nexus, but I think the Nexus G would be kind of neat. End of October – does that work for you? And how about name ideas? Via: CNET Cheers Jeff! |
Motorola Adds Global RAZR HD and RAZR i to Bootloader Unlock Program Posted: 05 Oct 2012 01:35 PM PDT Motorola extended its bootloader unlock program to the global RAZR HD and RAZR i, this afternoon. When I say “global” I mean the RAZR HD in Europe, Australia, South America and on Rogers in Canada. The RAZR i, and its Intel processor, will be unlockable “worldwide.” Props to Moto for finally creating a bootloader program, it’s just too bad that most in the U.S. won’t be able to take advantage of it unless they can save up $550 to $650, the full retail price of these phones. We aren’t sure if these other global phones are unlockable even when subsidized by carriers or not, but wouldn’t be surprised. If you glance at their specific product pages, there is no mention of them being separate “developer editions.” And this is where you flip the bird to U.S. carriers. Via: *Motorola |
Open webOS Being Ported to Galaxy Nexus, Gives the OS a Whole New Life Posted: 05 Oct 2012 01:35 PM PDT Around a year ago, webOS’s demise was highly publicized and the culmination of the debacle was the massive fire sale of HP Touchpads as it was decided that webOS would no longer be developed on. Luckily for us, instead of killing off the OS, HP decided to go open source and nothing excites the Android development community then trying to port an OS to a phone that it didn’t originally ship with. That brings us to today, where a port of webOS is being produced for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Now before you go looking for a download let me say that developers need only apply here. The guys behind this port have released their code and expect you to put it together yourself. Nevertheless, this could spark some potential interest in porting webOS, which was a unique and very usable OS, to other devices. If you feel like poking through the code, hit the source link below. Andru Charger Available in Black as the Andru Dark Posted: 05 Oct 2012 01:35 PM PDT Remember the Andru charger? If not, check out the quick review we did of it here. This week, it returned in a new color, black or “dark” according to the listing. As you’ll see in the pictures below, it’s the same Andru we loved from the beginning, but with a much more sinister vibe, hence the red eyes when plugged in. It has moveable arms, a soft touch finish, and comes with its own stand, just like the green version. It’ll run you $25 if you would like to purchase one. The Andru team has informed us that this special edition charger launches on October 11.* Via: *Andru Cheers Kim! |
