So Yeah, Apple Will Announce an iPad Mini on October 23

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 03:55 PM PDT

“We’ve got a little more to show you.” Get it? “Little.” So clever, Apple. And yes, that means that we will likely see a new iPad Mini (hope that isn’t the official name) when Tim Cook takes the stage at a special event on October 23. There is a chance that Apple also unveils a retina 13″ Macbook Pro (only thing I actually care about) and some other goods, but the star is the oft-rumored iPad Mini.
As an Android enthusiast, I have to wonder, do you care about this product? I know that many of you own iPads because whether you agree or not, it’s a great product and bigger Android tablets have been awful up until the last 6-8 months. I certainly don’t get the feeling that this product is on as many Apple fans’ radar as the normal iPad or iPhone, though. It sort of feels like Apple has realized that there is a smaller tablet market that Amazon and Google are dominating and wants to see if they can come in and dominate it as well. It just doesn’t seem to be carrying the same buzz or importance. I of course, could be wrong.
Thoughts? Want one? Don’t care at all? Nexus 7, for the win?

RAZR HD has a Massive Multi-color Notification Light Under the Front Speaker

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 03:55 PM PDT

I’m a sucker for a good notification light. When the Galaxy Nexus first launched with its multi-color notification light that sat in the chin of the device, I was super excited because this allowed for another level of customization. Thanks to apps like Light Flow, you can set up a different color for almost any application on your phone that has notifications. While playing with my*DROID RAZR HD*this morning, I realized that this is a phone that can take full advantage of multi-coloring, as well.*
Embedded under a see-through plastic grill at the top of the front of the device, you’ll find the notification light. When lit, it fills up the entire plastic piece, giving off more colorful light than any phone that I can recall. Rather than being the simple dot of color that you see on most phones, it expands light throughout the see-through rectangular cover, making this one of the better notification lights I have seen.
I immediately installed Light Flow and started tweaking specific colors for specific apps. In the video below, you can see it in action.

T-Mobile’s Isis Mobile Wallet App Appears on Google Play

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 03:55 PM PDT

The Isis Mobile Wallet app for T-Mobile is now live on Google Play. Rumors across the web are suggesting that T-Mobile is going to launch the mobile payment service on October 22 in two test markets, the same day that our sources said Verizon plans to. The app going live early is a bit surprising though, especially since T-Mobile and Isis haven’t actually announced that the service will go live on the 22nd.*
For now, the app itself is sort of useless. In order to use Isis, you have to have an NFC-SIM card, a supported device, and shop at a retailer that is “Isis Ready.” For T-Mobile, the supported devices will be the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, and Amaze 4G, all of which are NFC-equipped. To see the Isis “ready” phones for all carriers, hit up this link.
It shouldn’t be long now. With the app going live, T-Mobile and Isis will likely make an announcement any day.

DROID RAZR HD, RAZR M, and Atrix HD All Rooted

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 03:55 PM PDT

The new line of RAZR phones from Motorola have all been rooted today, thanks to Dan Rosenberg, aka @djrbliss. That includes the DROID RAZR M and yep, the RAZR HD. While we still need someone to confirm this method gaining root on the RAZR HD, you can see from my picture that it most certainly roots the RAZR M. Dan mentions that this method should work on the*Atrix HD, Photon Q, and Razr i, as well.*
It involves hooking up your device to a Windows PC, downloading a zip (found below), extracting that zip, installing current Motorola drivers, and then running a run.bat file which gives you simple instructions. Trust me, it takes all of 3 minutes to complete.

Amazon Selling the Verizon Galaxy Nexus for as Low as $0.01

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 03:55 PM PDT

By this point, you know the Samsung Galaxy Nexus whether you own one or not. While it might not have launched with the best specs in the world, being a Nexus certainly helps with the ease of unlocking and rooting. If you are looking for a rock-bottom deal on a decent Android device, Amazon’s new price on the G-Nex is going to be hard to pass up.
For new customers, the phone will cost a measly $0.01 and upgrading customers can have it for $29.99. These are pretty good prices considering this device has Android 4.1 Jelly Bean before most phones and will most likely get Android 4.2 before many other phones as well. If you’re thinking of upgrading, hit the link below.
Buy.
Cheers Nick!

Google Play Carrier Billing Coming to Verizon October 18

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 03:55 PM PDT

According to sources of ours, Verizon is planning to allow for Google Play carrier billing on October 18. Once live, users will be able to spend up to $25 per phone in the Google Play store and charge it to their Verizon account. Buying apps, music, and movies doesn’t get any simpler than this.
We are assuming the $25 fee is either a one-time transaction fee limit or a monthly limit rather than a life time limit. Basically, that means that you can’t buy a Galaxy Nexus or Nexus 7 and charge it directly to your VZW account.
Still, you have to be excited for this news. Long have we been jealous of AT&T customers and those from other carriers that have allowed for carrier billing.

DROID RAZR HD Unboxing and Initial Thoughts

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 03:55 PM PDT

The week has come for Motorola fans – it’s DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD launch week. According to the poll we ran in late September that asked, “What Verizon phone are you most interested in?” you picked the RAZR HD over the Galaxy Note 2 and the 5″ 1080p HTC device. Clearly, Motorola still makes you tingly inside, even after years of locking bootloaders and frustrating the developer community.
So today, we are happy to announce that we have a RAZR HD in hand and are ready to start putting it through a variety of tests to help you decide if this phone really is your best option. We’re going to focus on battery life, the big 4.7″ HD display, camera, and whether or not Moto did enough to make this stand out over the quad-core powered tablet-phone hybrid devices that are flooding the market.
To kick off our coverage, I walked through a quick unboxing to give you a feel for the phone, it’s looks and the version of Blur that we have seen on devices like the RAZR M. Ready? Still excited?*
Initial Thoughts

Motorola’s high-end materials are clearly in play here, giving the RAZR HD a more industrial feel over the soft plastics that other OEMs have chosen over the years. There is a metal band that runs around the phone that houses the Power and Volume switches, which I admit in the video, seem very sharp to the touch. I don’t think that’s a problem, just an observation.
The display is beautiful at first glance. It’s an HD Super AMOLED, so the colors really pop. I haven’t had enough time with it to tell if it even compares to what LG put in the Optimus G (our review), though. While cruising around the device, I haven’t noticed any stuttering, which makes sense since it sports a Snapdragon S4 processor and 1GB of RAM.
Overall, I like the industrial design, feel in hand, and am ready to see how long it can last on a single charge. Battery life is the big selling point with Motorola phones these days, so let’s see how it stacks up.
